Joseph Pilates

It’s been over 80 years since Joseph Pilates created what is known today as the Pilates method of exercise.

Born in Germany in 1880, Joseph Pilates was a sick and frail child.  Always determined to strengthen his body, he started practicing various forms of exercise and in fact became an accomplished gymnast, circus performer and boxer while also learning eastern forms of exercise like yoga and karate.

It was when Joseph was put into a prison camp during World War I that he started using all the resources available there to keep up his physical fitness.  That is why when someone first starts Pilates and does not only the matwork but sees what seemingly looks like torture machines (they’re great by the way…to take a look at the machines go here: Pilates Wunda Chair, Pilates Premier Reformer, Pilates Performer) may be a little startled.

The basis though of Pilates is the matwork. Matwork which is the pilates practiced by most people today can now be enhanced with body bands, rings, balance balls and body circles.
