Pilates
What differentiates Pilates from other methods of
exercise is that it is a very mindful exercise – it demands the
mind-body connection and in this way it is very different. You must concentrate on what you are doing.
It’s this act of being mindful that will allow you to free your
body to do amazing things. You will see that the more your practice, you will move
through increasing levels of difficulty and your body will start to
change. Pilates strengthens your smaller muscle groups to
support the movement and abilities of the larger muscles. It develops the smaller muscles (underneath the larger ones)
that often get no attention (in most exercise you strengthen the bigger
muscles). The problem with
traditional exercise is that the foundational smaller muscles are not
strong and make up a weak foundation leading to injuries. Pilates is known to create beautiful, strong, lean
bodies not bulky ones. It
does this by strengthening your abdominal core or powerhouse (where your
abdominal muscles connect with the small of the back and the buttocks)
while lengthening and stretching the other muscles. If we can learn to control this abdominal area of our bodies a new body will be yours. For years I suffered from a debilitating neck injury. I couldn’t do anything, sit, lie down, read, basically move without pain. I then started the Pilates method, and within weeks I could feel the difference and the pain subsequently dissipated – for me, after being in pain for years and basically having given up on ever feeling better (I’d seen a boatload of doctors who couldn’t help me) this was like a miracle for me. Pilates will change your life. It will keep you fit and healthy and will help you recover from debilating injuries as it has done for me. Once you start Pilates, you'll never want to stop as it magic is slowly revealed to you! |
